Wow! What a start to the 2006 New Year. We had our first guided pheasant hunt in 2006 Tuesday on the south CSA. The temperature was 71 degrees; an unbelievable temperature for January! If that didn’t set a new record for Western Kansas it had to be real close to one. Had a slight breeze also. Weatherman said 38 mph with gusts up to 53. Not a problem other than it gave the pheasant an unfair advantage. If you don’t believe me ask the hunters. Lets just say it’s a good thing the dogs pointed a lot of birds.

Stirred up a good many pheasant, the hunters got a lot of shooting in and the dogs were pointing like stars. Was awful hot for the dogs but not a serious problem since we run 3 on the ground and rotate them out after each trip down and back. I was told the dogs handled the heat better than the guide did but you know how hunters are about stretching the truth.

It’s hard to believe there are less than 90 hunting days left in the 2005/2006 CSA hunting season. Scott says we still have some days available during the week in January and February but that there is more availability in March. The weekends are at a premium now but Scott is good at doing “creative scheduling.” Give him a call. I bet he can get you worked in somehow.
